rosa (she/they) is a seattle-based ceramicist originally from san antonio, tx. she hand builds and wheel throws, joining the two techniques in her ceramic work.

rosa employs a play driven process. their approach to ceramics reflects their personal commitment to practicing play in adulthood and slowing life down. each piece of theirs is crafted to celebrate the fun of creation and the excitement of an unlikely success. she experiments with utility and the contrasts between soft fluid materials and bold immovable forms. she is most often inspired by organic shapes and repeating motifs that she sees in her surrounding built and natural world.

rosa’s current work explores themes of irony and intended use. they aim to navigate the space where form, medium, and function conflict, overlap, and compromise through porcelain versions of practical items, altering their intended use (or even rendering them entirely nonfunctional) through embellishments and materials. their overall body of work is characterized by sharp spikes and unglazed porcelain chains, adding physical obstacles to functional pottery and decorative sculptures that invite viewers to engage in play with.
